In Odd Plant Therapy, fetching the player's real date and time is utilized in many ways:
Changing The Room's appearance, music, and ambience
Chloe reacting to what time it is in specific dialogues / different text shown in some GUIs
Whether or not the moon is shown in the window at night
and finally, celebrating the player's birthday (and acknowledging Chloe's with party streamers in the room on that day)
Different "time-slots" of the day will change how The Room looks, and what ambience and music play.
The "times of day" are as follows:
5 AM - 6 AM ... Dawn, which uses the Dawn room type
6 AM - 12 PM ... Morning, which uses the Partly Cloudy room type
12 PM - 6 PM ... Afternoon, which uses the Sunny room type
6 PM - 7 PM ... Dusk, which uses the Dusk room type
7 PM - 10 PM ... Evening, which uses the Night (Lights On) room type by default
10 PM - 12 AM ... Night, which uses the Night (Lights Off) room type by default
12 AM - 5 AM ... Late At Night, which uses the Night (Lights Off) room type by default
This changes the Night music ("Goodnight") for a variant that swaps the piano and flute for a glockenspiel and violin ("Late at Night").
...Which then repeat every day.
Changing the Weather to Cloudy, Rainy, or Snowy does not have the game disregard what time it is, and any time-specific differences in dialogue will remain.
Dawn throughout Dusk (Dawn --> Morning --> Afternoon --> Dusk) will share the same room ambience, consisting of wind and birds chirping.
Meanwhile, Evening throughout Late at Night (Evening --> Night --> Late at Night) will share the same room ambience, consisting of wind and crickets instead.
Dawn and Dusk share the same music, "The Rising and Setting Sun".
Evening and Night share the same music, "Goodnight".
In the Main Menu, the music that plays here is also affected by the time.
The day variant of the Main Menu music ("One Day at a Time"), plays throughout 5 AM to 7 PM, mimicking the Dawn to Dusk time-slot.
Meanwhile, the night variant of the Main Menu music ("One Night at a Time"), plays throughout 7 PM to 5 AM, mimicking the Evening to Late at Night time-slot.
Chloe will react to what time it is for the player in specific dialogues. For example, if the player says they're going to sleep past midnight, she'll express relief that they're getting rest. If the player says they're going to sleep in the middle of the day, she'll assume they're taking a nap instead.
In time-based greetings and Daily Check-ins that are in the middle of the night, she'll also remind the player to rest.
In the Calendar GUI, the "Current Weather" section will alter depending on what time it is. Depending on the current Room Type, an icon will appear for the weather / time of day, and some text accompanying it. If late at night, the text will additionally recommend the player to get some rest soon.
When interacting with Chloe in the Coping Mechanisms GUI, you may occasionally see a random dialogue that relates to what time of day / weather it is. For example, if you have the weather set to Rainy, she'll express how she's relieved they're inside where it's dry, and she could easily fall asleep to the sound of rain.
A specific time-slot in the middle of the night determines if the moon appears in the window, and where it's positioned.
The moon in Odd Plant Therapy is always displayed as a full one, and does not keep track of lunar cycles due to it being inconsistent every year.
It begins at 9 PM. The moon is positioned at the bottom left of the window.
At 10 PM, it changes to the top-center-left (to the left of the window frame's center line.)
At 11 PM, it changes to the top-center-right instead (to the right of the window frame's center line.)
At 12 AM, it changes to the bottom left of the window.
Finally, at 1 AM, the moon will disappear completely.
In general, the sections are meant to mimic the same arc of motion the moon does in the sky, except heavily exaggerated with less time in OPT's case.
Currently, the birthday system is a work-in-progress, and only upwards of birthdays up to August has functionality.
Despite this, for functioning birthdays, Chloe is capable of celebrating them with the player.
On the player's birthday, colorful party streamers will be strung up in the room for the entire day.
A Reminder will also be automatically set up that the player can view. The Reminder notification is pink with a party-popper emoji.
After celebrating, the Reminder will disappear for the rest of the play session. The Reminder will reappear again if the player rejoins the game.
In the Calendar GUI, the text anticipating any events / holidays will change to say happy birthday to the player.
On Chloe's birthday (February 4th), the room will have party streamers for the entire day.
